We will now focus on the ever so important characteristic of BELIEF. The following famous quote from Napoleon Hill has guided me throughout my life: “Whatever your mind can conceive and believe - you can achieve.” However simple that may sound, truer words have never been spoken.
Throughout our lives, all of us dream of being able to do and achieve certain things. When boys are growing up, they dream of someday being a professional baseball, football, or basketball player. But along the way, they are faced with someone else's opinion of whether or not they have the size, speed, or ability to really make it in the professional ranks. Those negative comments can kill dreams.
The world is full of DREAM BUSTERS, i.e., people who don’t believe in themselves or others; people who would rather discourage someone who dreams, rather than believe in them, and help them to reach their dreams.
However, the truly resilient individual is one that will challenge someone else's negative opinion, and even feed on it to believe in himself even more. Can you imagine what ridicule Spud Webb must have went through when he was sharing his dreams of becoming a professional basketball player as a teenager? He was over a foot shorter than most other players, in a game where height is absolutely critical. Can you imagine how much he must have believed in himself, and how hard he had to work to become successful?
Sylvester Stallone had his script for the movie Rocky rejected 32 times. But because of his strong BELIEF in it, he refused to quit. Rocky had a paltry budget of $1 million, and ultimately grossed well over $100 million. Talk about a return on investment!
Let’s go even bigger…How about Walt Disney? His idea to build DisneyWorld was rejected by over 50 banks. Why didn’t Walt stop at 30 or 40 rejections? Because his BELIEF in his idea was so strong that he would continue until it became a reality. As a result, millions and millions of happy memories are made in one of the most amazing places on Earth.
Let’s go even bigger…How about Thomas Edison? After 10,000 failures, he still kept going until he created the light bulb. He said, “When I have finally decided that a result is worth getting, I go ahead on it and make trial after trial until it comes,” and “The real measure of success is the number of experiments that can be crowded into 24 hours.” That’s the power of BELIEFS! And because of the strength of his beliefs, the entire world lights up at night.
The stories go on and on. Why? Because having strong beliefs in your abilities is a prerequisite to achievement. Your belief is the key that unlocks the door. And before you even get to the door, you’ll have more than enough people along the way who will try to knock that key out of your hands by telling you that you can’t make it.
It’s up to you whether or not you will listen to them. Spud Webb, Sylvester Stallone, Walt Disney, and Thomas Edison didn’t listen. They just kept moving towards the door.
Each and every person experiences life in their own way. Hence, life is interpreted differently by everyone. How could anyone possibly tell Walt Disney that his idea would fail? How could they know? Disney wasn’t trying to defy any natural laws. He wasn’t using force against anyone. So how could they possibly know that he would fail? Answer: They didn’t know.
The same applies to you. If someone tells that you can’t succeed, and you listen, you’re actually taking the advice of a person who doesn’t know; a person who only knows life from their own experiences. This is why it’s so disappointing when people don’t follow their dreams. They let themselves be stopped by another person’s opinion.
Never, ever, let someone else's negative opinion stop you from fulfilling your dreams. Avoid negative people like the Plague because you are very special in your own way. You must believe that you could improve your skills, set a plan, and THEN DO IT!
