Moods and Emotions

Question-Week ending Sunday 04/11/04:
When you think of the word DESIRE - what is the first thought that comes to your mind? Please read our Pre-Poll Commentary before taking this poll.

Pre-Poll Commentary:

Our eleventh keyword in our poll series on moods and emotions is DESIRE. For the purpose of this poll we will describe the meaning of DESIRE as "an eager wish to obtain, accomplish or enjoy something."

A complete list of the polls in this series can be found below:

Introduction to Positive Moods and Emotions

It's strictly coincidental that exactly four years and four days ago, I published an article titled Desire Is A Powerful Emotion. At that time, in April of 2000, I could never have guessed that four years and four days hence, I would be writing about this same emotion on my website, in a poll commentary reaching visitors from all over the world. Even more coincidental is the fact that I published the above article 4 years and 4 days ago (maybe even 4 hours too) and today's date is 04/04/04.

Perhaps the first coincidence can best explain the emotion of Desire. As I have stated many times throughout my works on this website, I am often asked what motivates me to invest my precious time to maintain this website for no financial gain. It's so intriguing to people, that every week I invest time and money to share knowledge with others free and unconditionally on this site. This phenomenon can best be described as "MY DESIRE" to do so. I am eager to share and help others to move into positive action - in order to help them improve and ENJOY their life a little bit more. The notion that I am helping others, definitely improves my life as well.

I must admit that this website is also a huge benefit to my private consulting clients. The PowerPoint Presentations I use in my consulting business have links to this website, so that they could read and study my articles, polls and philosophies at their convenience 24/7. However, it was a sheer DESIRE to HELP OTHERS four years ago, fourteen years ago, and perhaps even twenty four years ago that enabled me "to get exactly where I wanted to be today."

Desires move people into action. It's tough to move off the mark in any endeavor, without the eager desire to do so. There are so many actions and habits that we know are good for us. But we just ignore these habits and actions until we really desire to do them. By clicking this link on The Emotion Of Desire, you will learn how outside forces create desires for us. However, learning and practicing how to create and steer your own positive desires can make a tremendous difference in the outcome of your life.

Let us know in this week's poll, the first thought that comes to your mind when you think of the word DESIRE? This poll will end on Sunday 04/11/04, when the results will be displayed.

Please take a moment to share this poll with three other caring people you know by clicking on the "e-mail a friend icon" below. Our polls and commentaries are enjoyed by hundreds of individuals weekly, with previous polls featured in the top ten of search engines like Google and Yahoo.

  • 31% of voters chose from our list - "Having More Money" as the first thought that came to their mind when they think of the word DESIRE.
  • 24% of voters chose from our list - "Eating Tasty Food" as the first thought that came to their mind when they think of the word DESIRE.
  • 23% of voters chose from our list - "Having More Fun" as the first thought that came to their mind when they think of the word DESIRE.
  • 10% of voters chose from our list - "Sleeping Soundly" as the first thought that came to their mind when they think of the word DESIRE.
  • 08% of voters chose from our list - " Enjoying Your Work " as the first thought that came to their mind when they think of the word DESIRE.
  • 04% of voters chose from our list - "Watching TV" as the first thought that came to their mind when they think of the word DESIRE.
Post-Poll Commentary:
For most of the week, "Eating Tasty Food" was leading the results in this poll. Then it seemed around Thursday or Friday "Having More Money" tied for first and eventually won out by a margin of 8%. The combination of the above two took a 55% of the votes. Our third place answer "Having More Fun" took in a strong 23% of the vote. And I can't tell you how happy I was that "Watching TV" only attracted 4% of our respondents.

So what can we learn from our sampling? I guess Money still reins king on the list of desires I presented. People always seem to desire more money than they presently have.

As a footnote, I must admit that I did purposely leave "desire for more sex" out of our poll answers. I did this for two reasons. First because this is a G rated website. Second because I think the word DESIRE is too often associated with sex and there are much more meaningful connotations to the word desire.

As I learned again this week in my consulting practice, people must "have a desire" to move into action. You can help create a desire in someone. But you can't make someone desire something. That desire must come from within them.

We also should note that desires are often temporary and just passing through your thoughts. They are by no means permanent. If you don't take advantage of your desires when they are at their peak, they can wither away quickly. Thus understanding this potent emotion is extremely important if you want to capitalize on its power.

We hope you are enjoying this series on moods and emotions and will continue to take part in our polls each week.
