Monday's Word belay = to secure or make fast; to cancel To secure a rope, a sailor can belay it around a cleat.
Tuesday's Word starboard = right side of a ship. Vikings put their steering or "star" on the right side. The right side of a craft is the starboard.
Wednesday's Word port = left side of ship. Vikings used a loading board or "larboard" at port, but it was easily heard as "starboard", "port" side evolved. The port side of the ship is tied to the pier.
Thursday's Word abaft = toward the rear or stern of a boat With the forward hold overloaded, some cargo was moved abaft.
Friday's Word bright-work = the polished woodwork or metal on a boat The midshipmen were kept busy polishing the bright-work.
